We were missing winter, so we set out for a quick trip to the side of the Rax.
Preiner Gscheid is just a 20-minute drive from Waldschlössl, making it a perfect destination for a half-day or full-day snowy adventure. There’s a ticket machine in the middle of the parking area – parking costs €4.
From there, you can choose between two trails leading uphill: one is shorter and steeper, the other is a longer, winding forest path. We went with friends and took the more relaxed option – about 3.5 km with 300–350 m elevation gain.
The highlight of the hike – quite literally – is the Waxriegelhaus. It’s a reliable stop for a hearty meal, and they even offer gluten-free options without fuss. After a warm lunch and a good rest, we started our descent…
Slipping, sliding – the way down was its own adventure
Going back down, everyone made their way however they could – sliding, braking, laughing. The downhill stretch was around 2 km long and perfect for sledding fun. (If you don’t have a sled, you can rent one at the Raxalpenhof in Prein.)
